St. Vincent de Paul Society – SMM Conference

For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. Matt 25:29

Our St. Margaret Mary Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society is blessed by our parish’s very generous support and contributions, both in cash and non-perishable food and household items. We greatly appreciate the trust put in us to be good stewards of generosity to those people who come to us for help.

Most people come to us as a last resort, when they’re threatened with a shutoff notice from the utility companies or an eviction notice from their landlord. Some come for food assistance or transportation assistance.

80% of our clients are single-parent families and their average age is 39 years. 88% are unemployed. So a broad picture is these are people who have experienced a loss–of a spouse, a job, or their health–and were ultimately pushed to seek help by the threat of severe consequences if they didn’t.

While we have encountered a few people who work the system, our experience is the great majority don’t want to ask for help at all, but have to.

There are four ways you can help:

  1. Pray for our Conference, that we may be Christ to those people who seek help from us.
  2. of St. Vincent de Paul. If you can spare a couple of hours once in a while, your help is greatly needed.
  3. Continue to support us financially and consider establishing a recurring donation.
  4. Continue to donate non-perishable food and household items. We have included a short list on the opposite side of this sheet with the items most needed for our own SMM pantry.
