St. Margaret Mary School, a private Catholic elementary school, has been educating children in the metropolitan community of Omaha, Nebraska, for almost 100 years. The school, established in 1921 by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, serves kindergarten through eighth grades. In 1924, Monsignor Joseph Suneg, a devout priest and talented wood carver, became the pastor and administrator. He opened the doors of the present school building in 1951 and stayed until his retirement in 1969. His legacy touches the lives of students today as much as it did in 1951.
A 2 ½ year renovation and expansion project of the school and parish began in 1996, with school improvements including mechanical and electrical renovation. The project added an elevator, administrative offices, two computer labs, a new resource library, a music room, a science lab and made accommodations for handicap accessibility.
In 2007, a geothermal heating and air conditioning system, plus new thermal paned windows were added to the school building.
As one of 29 elementary metropolitan schools of the Archdiocese of Omaha, Nebraska, St. Margaret Mary serves the needs of over 500 students from its location in the central part of the city.
The foundation for such interaction is the St. Margaret Mary parish community, committed both spiritually and financially to the achievement of this philosophy. Our desire is to encourage each member of the Saint Margaret Mary community to become personally responsible to God, self, family, and country. Within this environment, it is the purpose of St. Margaret Mary School to produce happy, successful, active members of the Body of Christ and the community.
In 2008 St. Margaret Mary School was designated a Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.
As we continue the second decade of the millennium, we are charged with the task of producing students who will be equipped to work and live in a global society that will demand much from them. They will need to be members of the Body of Christ who are spiritually, emotionally, morally, intellectually, physically, socially and technologically equipped to live their lives based on the Gospel values and the Catholic Tradition.
St. Margaret Mary receives 2016 Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award for helping students go from Zero to Sixty
Let’s Move! Active Schools, part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative dedicated to ensuring 60 minutes of physical activity a day is the norm in K-12 schools, honored Mrs. Sheri Vollmer, Physical Education teacher for St. Margaret Mary School with the 2016 Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award for outstanding efforts in creating an Active School environment.
The Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award is the nation’s top physical education and physical activity distinction for K-12 schools and celebrates a school’s commitment to providing students with at least 60 minutes a day of before, during and after school physical activity. Only 544 schools across the country achieved this prestigious honor in 2016.
To earn a Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award, a school must have met significant benchmarks in five areas: physical education; physical activity before and after school; physical activity during school; staff involvement; and family and community engagement.
